Amy Spillert is back this week with her lovely original songs inspired by the ocean, nature, history, love, and friendship sung in her even lovelier voice. Amy also has set of cover tunes that are a perfect fit for farmers markets, such as Greg Brown’s Canned Goods and Cheryl Wheeler’s When Fall Comes to New England, and fun family songs, such as Dar Williams The Babysitter’s. e sur to stop by for a listen! Music will start around 10:00 a.m.
We are pleased to welcome More Than Words (MTW) in our nonprofit guest spot for their second visit of the season. MTW is a nonprofit social enterprise that empowers youth who are in the foster care system, court involved, homeless, or out of school to take charge of their lives by taking charge of a business. It began as an online bookselling training program for youth in DCF custody in 2004 and opened its vibrant bookstore on Moody St in Waltham in 2005 and added its Starbucks coffee bar in 2008. MTW replicated its model in the South End of Boston in 2011, thereby doubling the number of youth served annually. While the programs are open to youth from across the state, accessibility does limit participation to those who can commute to the current locations. Please stop by and learn about this great program and how you can help them grow so as to reach even more youth in our communities. You can also get great books at bargain prices!
The Wakefield Beebe Library Pop Up Library is back for their final visit of the season. You can check out books and sign up for a library card if you need one. Librarian Miss Holly will be back, too, telling community and farm themed and interactive stories throughout the day. Fun for all ages!
WHAT’S COOKING? Last week, even with the rain (!) we made a Luffa Squash and Fennel Sauté using just five ingredients, including luffa squash (yes, the kind that, when fully ripened and then dried, becomes a luffa sponge!) from Flats Mentor Farm, fennel bulb from Farmer Dave’s, and on onion from Kelly’s Farm, along with a splash of maple syrup from Ackermann’s Maple Farm and a touch of salt. Make that six ingredients if including the olive oil for cooking. Recipes are posted on our website and hard copies are available at the Market Kitchen tent. Stop by between 10-11 or so to find out what the cooking demo will be about this week. This week, we will make a pasta sause using carrots and beets as the base, perfect for folks who can’t eat acidy foods or just want something different. As always, all the main ingredients will be sourced that morning from our farmers and specialty food vendors. And remember: If you see something at one of our farmers’ tents that you want to try, let us know and we will get it, wash it off, and chop or slice it up for you to try!
`1111Yarrow or Blake will be with us this week bringing their super balloon twisting skills, we will have the Kid’s Activity tent set up and stocked with plenty of paper and crayons. As always, there will be hula hoops, sidewalk chalk, and jump ropes on hand for kids of all ages, and we now have an extra tent and chairs set up so folks can take a break from shopping in a bit of shade.

As of Friday early afternoon we could use a market bucks counter and another person for breakdown. For setup and breakdown, remember: many hands – and the two hand trucks we have – make for much lighter work! We could also use someone – or two – to get the highway signs at the end of the day.

Produce: Both Farmer Dave’s and Kelly’s Farm will even MORE produce, with summer crops such as tomatoes and perhaps even some berries coming in along with green and wax beans, broccoli, cauliflower, different types of winter squash, root vegetables, and so much more. And, apples, of course! Macs, Honeycrisp, Cortlands, Macoun, and Golden Delicious, and maybe some more.
Flats Mentor Farm will have their amazing Asian greens and squash, as well as select root such as beets and carrots, and the very best fresh herbs around. If they have bitter lemon grass, melon or luffa squash, we can give you Market Kitchen Tent -tested recipes!
Pasture-raised Meats, Poultry, and Eggs: Lilac Hedge Farm along with a wide assortment of chops, ribs, and sausages, as well as ground beef, pork, and lamb, and poultry and fresh eggs. They also offer local honey, and really, really tasty beef jerky products. as well. AND – it is time to order your Thanksgiving Turkey! Turkeys will be delivered to the Melrose-Wakefield Winter Farmers Market at Memorial Hall in Melrose on November 20.

Seafood: The Fish Lady will have her usual assortment of lovely freshly caught local seafood. She also may have some fresh frozen selections, perfect for when you want to wait a few days before enjoying your catch. Best to show up early before your favorite sells out! Specialty Foods: Bondat Foods is here for their last visit of the season, so be sure to stock up. This market manager keeps at least one of each, or even another extra for backup, of their six seasoning/rub mixes in her kitchen so any meal can be made extra special. Don’t miss a stop at Deano’s Pasta for really amazing pastas, raviolis, and sauces, perfect for a quick gourmet meal. In Good Taste is also here for their last visit of the season, so be sure to get their amazing salsa. And, from hummus to olives, from spinach pies to out of this world baklava, be sure to visit Samira’s Homemade for their Middle Eastern foods.
Baked Goods: SPECIALS! Goodies Homemade has Pumpkin spice cookies and pumpkin whoopie pies, along will all their great cookies. AND, along with local honey and delicious yogurt, Roast Granola has a new seasonal product – pumpkin spice! It is made with pumpkin, cardamom, cinnamon, ginger & nutmeg. Sweetened with Ackermann’s maple syrup and a touch of brown sugar.
We will of course also be able to get lovely artisan loaves from Mamadou’s Artisan Bakery, sweet and savory baked goods, as well as excellent sandwiches from Swiss Bakers, and the very best popovers and more from The Popover Lady.
Beverages: Aaronap Cellars is here this week with their really nice wines made right here in Massachusetts. Along with more traditional styles, they also have a remarkably delectable maple dessert wine. You need to try it. And, Pour Man’s Coffee will be here, making sure that we can get the very best coffee around, along with additional tea and fruit based beverages. They have amazing sweet treats, too, as well Fair Trade coffee beans that Dean’s Beans blends especially for them. Note: Mike and Joe of Pour Man’s were having weather-related equipment issues last week. All looks clear for this week!
Pet Treats: Emmett’s Edibles is the place to find treats for your canine and feline friends. There are no additives, preservatives, or artificial colors in any of Emmett’s Edibles products.
Artisans: Kittredge Candles will be here this week as well as Salem Street Beadery and Alison Simcox and Doug Heath, with their great books about Lake Quannapowitt, Breakheart, and The Fellsway.
