Vendor Spotlight: Black Eyed Susan Sheep Dairy

Even though winter still has us reaching for our warmest jackets, the first signs of spring are beginning to appear. Snowdrops are already blooming—a reminder that spring is near and the Wakefield Farmers Market season is just around the corner.

As we count down to opening day on June 13th, our vendors are hard at work preparing for another vibrant market season. In this vendor spotlight, we’re excited to introduce one of our returning farms: Black Eyed Susan's Sheep Dairy.

From Hobby Farm to Local Favorite

This year marks Julie’s second season at the Wakefield Farmers Market, bringing her delicious, locally made products back to the community. What started as a hobby farm in Mont Vernon quickly grew into a thriving small business.

In 2009, Julie and her husband purchased Trow Farm, a 100-acre property, with the goal of preserving farmland from development. What began as a passion project soon evolved into a full-fledged dairy operation.

Julie started by making cheese for fun, eventually taking a cheese-making class in Vermont to refine her craft. Then came six sheep—each named Susan—which sparked the beginning of something special. Over time, their flock grew, along with demand for their farm-fresh sheep’s milk products.

Friends and family quickly fell in love with their cheese, lamb, and yogurt. Then came a standout favorite: sheep’s milk ice cream (gelato)—a unique and delicious treat you won’t want to miss at the market.

“I think our inspiration came from wanting to do work that mattered and that we enjoyed,” Julie shares.

Fresh, Local, and Made on the Farm

From March through October, Black Eyed Susan Sheep Dairy milks between 30 and 40 sheep. Like many local farm products, sheep’s milk production is seasonal and can be affected by weather conditions. Despite these challenges, the farm continues to produce high-quality, fresh dairy products year-round.

What sets Black Eyed Susan apart from other vendors is their commitment to quality and transparency. All of their cheese, yogurt, and gelato are made using milk sourced directly from their own farm, often produced fresh daily for maximum flavor and freshness.
