Why Shopping Local at Wakefield Farmers Market Matters

We’re midweek and counting down the days — not to Friday, but to another glorious Saturday market by the lake. With just a few markets left in the season, we’re soaking up every bit of fresh market fare we can: from crisp seasonal produce and warm baked breads to flavored coffees, small-batch foods, and handcrafted products. Our humble market has so much to offer this week.

You’ll find the full vendor list below, but before that, we want to pause and talk about what makes our market truly special. Shopping at a farmers market takes time, planning, and dedication. It’s an adjustment from the instant convenience of a grocery store — but it’s also slower, more intentional, and deeply meaningful.

The federal government defines “local food” as anything grown or produced within 400 miles. Here at the Wakefield Farmers Market, we think that’s stretching it. Our vendors are hyper-local — the farthest traveling just 60 miles (because farming in the suburbs isn’t always easy!). That means the food on your table hasn’t traveled across states or regions — it’s fresher, more nutritious, and rooted in community.

But beyond freshness, the impact of shopping local is economic. Did you know that for every dollar spent at a local business, 67 cents stays in your community? Compare that to only 3 cents when shopping at large chain stores. That difference is huge — and it’s what helps keep our neighborhoods thriving.

So this weekend, grab your tote bag, your bestie, and maybe a pumpkin spice coffee, and come stock up on the best of what our market has to offer this Saturday—and every Saturday through October 25th—from 9 AM to 1 PM at Hall Park on the Lake. Celebrate fall, shop local, and support the hardworking small business owners who make our community thrive.

Be sure to stay connected through our website and social media channels for updates, vendor spotlights, and weekly entertainment lineups.
